What is Team Joseph?

Team Joseph is a non-profit organization whose mission is to aggressively fund cutting edge research to find a treatment or cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.  It is our goal that when a parent hears a diagnosis of Duchenne, it is simply a manageable condition and no longer terrifying news.  Our focus is on rapidly moving basic research into applications that can make a difference for the current generation of boys afflicted with this devastating disease as well as for generations that aren’t even born yet. We are a caring community of motivated people joined together in efforts to give young boys affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy, not only a chance at a better life, but simply a chance at a life.

Formed around the fight of Joseph Penrod, Team Joseph began with a mom who wouldn’t let her son be defined by his diagnosis and, with the support of family, friends and an army of volunteers, has evolved into the movement it is today. Together as Team Joseph, we are working to turn the tables on Duchenne. It is our belief that it is not a matter of IF a cure is found; it’s a matter of WHEN.  We believe that a cure is within reach.  Exciting research is happening all over the world and we are proud to support scientific advances that will defeat Duchenne.

We are in a race against the clock, and we need everyone to be a part of the team. We will find a cure.  We will defeat Duchenne.

How we got here – A Note From Joseph’s Mom

It all started with a little boy named Joseph and a really crummy diagnosis.  A diagnosis that is brutal and surreal and so painfully real all at the same time.  It was a seemingly normal winter day ten years ago when a neurologist, who we’d met just moments before, told us that Joseph had Duchenne muscular dystrophy.  The doctor explained that there was no treatment or cure. Duchenne, he continued, is a progressive, degenerative muscle wasting disease that would steal Joseph’s ability to walk, to sit up, to use his arms.  Then it would attack his heart and lungs.
