It has always been our primary mission at Team Joseph to fund promising research that will result in treatments for all boys and young men battling Duchenne. When we work smart, leverage each dollar and work in close partnership with scientists, drug development companies, and other foundations, there is the promise for an end to Duchenne.
But while we work toward a treatment for all children and young men battling Duchenne, we need to take care of each other. Now. In this moment. As Duchenne progresses, the needs of a child and his family grow exponentially and caring for a child or young adult with Duchenne can be overwhelming. As advances in care result in an increase in the life expectancy of Duchenne patients, the long-term cost of care increases as well. Likewise, many parents must decrease work hours in order to care for their child, and those parents themselves are also aging, thus increasing the burden of care – financially, emotionally and physically.
We are committed to being there for families and helping them take the very best care of their children. This commitment has led to our partnership with our friends at Little Hercules Foundation and the development of the Duchenne Family Assistance Program.
We identified two priorities—to offer families financial assistance with expenses related to the care of a child or young adult with Duchenne, and to provide help and expertise to families who need access to recommended treatments and equipment, clinical care, and social services.
To work effectively and efficiently, Team Joseph will take the lead on assistance that includes, but is not limited to, purchasing equipment (scooters, manual wheelchairs, shower chairs, etc.), accessible ramps, transporation to clinic visits, vehicle modifications, and home modifications. Assistance is also available for educational opportunities, such as conferences, so families can educate themselves about the therapeutic landscape and improved standards of care. Little Hercules Foundation will provide case management services to patients and caregivers who have been denied access to treatments, clinical care, equipment, and social services.
